Health Tech Review: Using The Moves App With Nudge

Passive tracking. If you haven't heard this term yet, you will be hearing alot about it since the release of the iPhone 5s. That's because the new iPhone now has an M7 "motion coprocessor". This tiny new addition to the 5s means that it is now able to track all sorts of movements including sitting, standing, running, walking, biking, and more - all in the background without you needing to do anything but enable it once. While this may sound big brotherish to some, this is a great thing for health tech since it allows for much more accurate logging of your activities.

Moves App - The Original Passive Activity Tracker

I've been following the release of the Moves App ever since it was released at the first of the year. Frankly, I was blown away by it. First off, it was free. Second, it doesn't require any special dongle, wristband, or clip to attach to yourself or charge. Third, it's remarkably well designed and breaks your data down to the bare minimum of what you want to know.

Moves does this without a special chip or phone, which makes this app even more incredible. You can use it with older iPhones and Android phones as well.

Using Moves

Did I mention it was simple? Here, let me give you a detailed guide to use Moves:

  1. Download from App Store or Google Play

  2. Open Moves & Allow Passive Tracking

  3. Start Moving

Seriously, you can't get any easier than that. From then on it knows whether you're walking, running, biking, and driving and tells you exactly how active you were and where you've been that day. It provides you with the different locations that you've been so you can see how much you've moved at each location. If you enter in your height, weight, and age, Moves will also tell you how many calories you burn each day. Allowing push notifications will send you a message each morning giving you a breakdown of the previous day.

Moves App Syncs With Nudge

Moves recently opened up their API to developers to allow Connected Apps. Of course Nudge wanted to integrate with such an amazing app, so on August 30th Moves announced that Nudge would be part of it's first wave of Connected App partners.

Syncing Moves with Nudge is super simple. If you're downloading the Nudge app for the first time, you will be prompted to sync with Moves. If you're already using Nudge and have the latest version of the app, just click the dashboard link in the upper left hand corner and select the "Sync" button. There you will be able to turn "Moves Sync" on.

After you have Moves sync enabled in Nudge, all of your activity data will import into Nudge automatically at the end of the day. Really, it's that simple! If you want to add activities that aren't tracked by Moves manually, you can do so in Nudge and it will add it to the Moves data.

Battery Life

One slight drawback to using Moves is since it is constantly running in the background, it does reduce the battery life in your phone. If battery life is already a problem, you might want to consider getting a Mophie Juice Pack iPhone case which contains an extra battery built into its shell and increases your phone's life by up to 200%.

Of course, activity is just one part of what figures into you're Nudge Factor score so you'll want to manually log your food, water, sleep, and indulgences, however syncing with Moves makes Nudging that much easier!

Nudge measures how healthy you're living with a single health score, the Nudge Factor.
