Looking Back At My Health Tracking Market Predictions After Q1

Posted by Mac Gambill on May 1, 2014 11:10:37 AM

Several months ago I wrote a piece titled "3 Themes Carrying Over Into 2014," in which I highlighted some of the trends I expected to come to fruition this year in the health tracking market. Just to review, one of the core questions I raised was whether or not a typical consumer really wants to lug around two devices, their phone and a separate tracking gizmo, or wearable.

Most Likely Candidates to Crack Passive Nutrition Tracking?

Posted by Mac Gambill on Apr 3, 2014 1:20:00 PM

It's no secret, nutrition tracking systems are generally tedious and frustrating. With each calorie consumed users are forced to manually search through glorified databases and guess at whether the item on the page is really THAT similar to what was eaten. For example, simply typing "banana" into a calorie tracker yields dozens of results ranging from bananas of various sizes all the way to "banana pudding." Now envision having to perform this task after every meal … daunting, right? Well, what if that was no longer the case?

What the Heck is a Superfood?

Posted by Mac Gambill on Mar 7, 2014 5:01:00 PM

You can't read a product label anymore without seeing "Superfood" written somewhere on the wrapper. Whether it's a bar, a drink, or even some type of supplement chances are that the manufacturer wants to ensure that you know that this delicious item is actually good for you… even if it tastes like sand. But what qualifies a food as being "super"? With the introduction of this hot, new classification, we dive in to see what foods have been trending, and which ones to keep our eyes on.

New Player in the Health Tracking Space?

Posted by Mac Gambill on Feb 26, 2014 11:30:00 AM

Several notable outlets released stories this week announcing that high-end wearable maker, Basis, has put itself on the market, reportedly holding conversations with practically every major consumer tech company out there. Just think of a brand and they have probably spoken to them. For those unfamiliar, Basis has been touted as one of the highest quality trackers on the market with unmatched tracking capabilities, not only possessing the ability to track a person's steps, but to even measure items such as skin temperature and heart rate patterns. Looking at the products specs alone, it's easy to see why these watches come fully equipped with a $200 price tag.

With such an advanced sensor, whoever acquires the Basis technology will have the ability to position themselves as one of the most innovative products on the market, and rumor has it that there may be a new player in the wearables space.

Waking Up To a Cancer 'Tidal Wave'

I generally start my mornings with a hot cup o' Joe and an eye out for the latest soccer news on BBC, but today my typical routine was tabled by an eye-opening caption, "Cancer 'tidal wave' on Horizon warns WHO". Being passionate about healthy living I dove into the piece anxiously awaiting potential new research identifying a never-before-seen cancer culprit, but I was surprised by what followed.

Morning Smoothie | Unleash the Warrior Within

The older I get the more I tend to find myself living by some type of routine, whether in regards to work or sleep schedule I generally find myself meandering through various lifestyle trends.  Is this a bad thing?  Does this mean I'm a boring person? Of course not, but I think it's interesting on occasion to take a step back and analyze habits you may have adopted along the way.  My latest addiction comes in the form of a 2.2 Horsepower, well-oiled machine with blade speeds high enough to heat soup - The Vitamix 750 Series.

Wearable Tech Can Project Your Mood and More

Posted by Mac Gambill on Jan 21, 2014 1:59:00 PM

In a piece I wrote several weeks ago about upcoming trends in health tech I briefly mentioned the recent introduction of tech-enabled clothing, but following this year's CES it is apparent that 2014 is going to be the year of wearable... And I'm not simply referring to the shiny new UP band on your wrist. Aside from fitness-specific devices, CES highlighted a segment of wearables that will forever change the way you look at your clothes in the morning. (Note: If you ever had a mood ring, then this one's for you!)

Mobile Health Tracking | 3 Themes Carrying Over Into 2014

Posted by Mac Gambill on Jan 7, 2014 12:35:00 PM

It's that time of the year again - you know, the time when people start voicing their opinions on what the following year will bring. Health technology has had a roller coaster year, from the introduction and promise of passive nutrition tracking in the Airo wristband, to the FDA's crack-down on 23andMe for skipping the FDA mandatory pre-market approval.

But what about health tracking? How will we be monitoring our step counts in 2014? How will we track our daily nutritional quotas? Could a connected toothbrush POSSIBLY become trendy? With so many questions, here is what I think may be around the corner in 2014:
